Tying the knot

? There were more than 109,000 marriages in Australia in 2005.
? 59.6% of these were conducted by civil celebrants.
? For the majority, 74,000, it was their first marriage.
? About 14,500 Victorians had civil ceremonies, with the Melbourne Registry Office performing more than 15%.
? The NT had the highest rate of civil ceremonies, 74.4%.
